Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning is character development for children and young adults. It is based on core competencies that help kids learn about their emotions and how to relate with other people. Mastering these core competencies is a life-long pursuit. Starting early is an important step toward enjoying a well-rounded and fulfilling life.

Character development:

• Self-Awareness: Understanding how your thoughts and emotions influence your behavior. Skills include Assertive communication, self-confidence, and acceptance of criticism.
• Self-Management: The ability to regulate your emotions and behaviors in ways appropriate to the situation, to make goals, and have the discipline to work toward them. Skills include impulse control, stress management, and self-discipline.
• Responsible Decision-Making: The ability to make responsible choices and hold ones-self accountable for the consequences; both positive and negative. Skills include situational awareness, problem-solving, and reflection.
• Social Awareness: The ability to understand one’s position in social situations and how one’s actions affect the social dynamic. Skills include: following the example of others, reading social cues such as facial and body language, and empathy
• Relationship Skills: The ability to relate well to others. Skills include active listening, clear communication, and conflict resolution.

Emotional intelligence is needed to work well with others and thrive at work and in social situations. A person who shows ‘soft skills’ is often the most valued member of any team.
