One of the Auxiliary's many volunteer areas is the Outside Transportation Department. They provide golf cart rides for patients, staff, visitors, and fellow volunteers from their cars to the hospital entrances. They are available from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., 7 days a week, 365 days a year, come rain or come shine. These drivers are the first to greet people as they get out of their car or golf cart and the last to say goodbye as they return them to their vehicles. It has been calculated that drivers working each of the 8 four-hour shifts per day carry a minimum average of 80 passengers. That's 20 passengers an hour. Three of the drivers just passed the 1000-hour mark so that means they have transported 20,000 passengers from the parking lot to the hospital. Hats off to the volunteers!! Making this many daily trips means many miles and a lot of wear and tear on the golf carts. The Auxiliary Foundation just purchased 3 new golf carts to assure the reliability of the transportation.
