The Mapleton City Fire Department has proudly served our community for over 60 years. Our mission is to protect life, property, and the environment by providing exceptional and progressive, all-hazard emergency services and public education. We are proud to serve this community with competence, efficiency, and trust.

Department Responsibilities

Mapleton City Fire Department is a risk Fire Department. Daily staffing includes a Chief Officer, one engine with a Full-time Captain, a part-time Firefighter Paramedic, and a part-time Firefighter AEMT. We also staff one ambulance with two paid on-call Fire / EMS crew members. We page our paid-per-call volunteer crews on any major emergency to staff additional equipment.

We have a diverse team, comprised of full-time, part-time, and volunteer professionals, that we weave together into one combination all-risk Fire Department. The staffing of fire and emergency services has been a focus for our City leaders during the past few years. We have had to think outside the box to progress as a department, maintain consistent reliable staffing levels, and be cost-effective. We have combined two separate city departments (FIRE and EMS) into one fire rescue department. We actively recruited new dual-function employees and even certified some of our personnel to do both the jobs of Fire and EMS. Having a firefighter who is also an EMT makes sense and is the most cost-effective model for Mapleton City. We have expanded our volunteer program to include people living outside of Mapleton. These volunteers can now stay in our station for a paid-on-call volunteer shift and serve our citizens. Volunteers receive training/experience, and uniforms, and we even pay volunteers a nominal fee for their time. We have also recruited Mapleton City employees as volunteer resources. We have police, public works, parks, and city administration employees who all volunteer and serve Mapleton off the clock. Our crews truly embody our Facebook and Instagram hashtag #Mapletonserves.

Balance is important, and the balance is honoring our valued volunteer roots and heritage while moving forward into a combined paid and volunteer department. With increased call volume and population, the need to have a guaranteed response has become a reality. Education, communication, and getting real buy-in have been key. It’s said that firefighters hate two things… the way it has always been and change. Change can be a tough road, but it has helped us all to see the good fruits come from changes made. Our new model has made Mapleton safer and that has been validated. ISO inspected us in April 2019 and our department was honored with an improved rating from Class 5 to Class 3. Only 5 to 13 % of fire departments nationwide in 2019 received this score. For a City the size of Mapleton, this improved rating has been quite an accomplishment for our entire department.

As we look to the future, we will continue to ensure that Mapleton residents receive the best Fire and EMS coverage we can provide. We will continue to honor our volunteer heritage and be inclusive of our valued paid-on-call / paid-per-call volunteers. We will continue to set our professional standards high and strive to provide exceptional customer service. We remember what an honor and privilege it is, that we the chosen few, get to serve and make a difference in our community every day. We will continue to honor this calling with respect, pride, and the dedication it deserves.
