As set forth in our mission statement, we have a unique opportunity to fulfill Christ's command to care for the sick. St. Paul's letter to the Colossians (3.12) instructs us to clothe yourself with kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. When you volunteer at St. Martin's, you will also clothe yourselves as instructed by St. Paul.

We can all easily recall Mother Teresa of Calcutta's exemplary service to the poor. She is our tangible inspiration for a gentle care, the benchmark for all encounters at St. Martin's. Mother Teresa was fond of saying, We can do no great things, only small things with great love.

Our patients walk through the door in need of health care. A warm smile, a gentle touch, a listening ear, and an attitude of acceptance can extend to all the healing touch of Christ. True compassion will mean suffering and bearing with those we serve. The Prayer of St. Teresa of Avila speaks of Christ having no hands, no feet, no eyes but ours. Let us use our abilities to be the hands, feet, and eyes of Christ yet at the same time recognize Him in our patients.
