Community Service

Serving our broader community is an important component of a Sacramento Waldorf School education. We find that performing service work helps broaden our students perspectives on social issues and fosters within them a lifelong desire to give back. Students are required to complete 30 hours of community service each school year, carried out in a variety of ways including conducting wetlands mitigation, performing maintenance work, and providing educational support for other students. 

The High School Student Council organizes an annual holiday food drive supporting a variety of community organizations. In 2018, the students began supporting the Homeless Period Project. This community service began as Senior Project and has become an annual tradition.

The Girl Up walkathon is another annual tradition. Girl Up is an organization founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010 to support adolescent girls around the world. One of its primary objectives is to raise funds for adolescent girls in developing countries who lack access to the education, healthcare, and social and economic opportunities many of us take for granted.

Service work can include volunteering with organizations such as Loaves and Fishes, The Greenhouse, UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento Youth Court, Saddle Pals, WEAVE, Habitat for Humanity, the SPCA, and Head Start. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in service with organizations with missions about which students are passionate.
